Saints 27 v 24 Deepings RUFC - Away Cup Draw on 14 Apr 2018

Published on Monday, 16 April 2018

St Neots Saints had the perfect opportunity to test Deepings in the H&P Cup Semi-Final, before next weeks crucial league fixture , in which Saints must beat Deepings to take the Midlands 4 East title.

But St Neots Saints, who appeared to be cruising to the league title just 4 weeks ago, have struggled to find their form in recent weeks, and on Saturday, again, they made hard work of their cup semi-final win.

A determined home Deepings side came out strongly and shocked Saints when they ran in a try out wide to take an early lead. Saints responded immediately with a well worked try when big forwards Ross Hubbard and Rhod Howcroft made line breaking runs into the Deepings half. Howcroft then found hooker Finn Martin in support and Martin got the ball to the back line where fly-half Grant Hobbs found centre Lewis Hall and Hall released his winger Stefan Gallucci to finish off a good team try.

Saint extended their lead shortly after when No.8 Howcroft picked up from the base of a scrum 40 metres out and attacked the blindside. With defenders committed, Howcroft passed to scrum-half Jack Webb who passed to centre Nic Robinson who broke tackles running through two Deepings defenders to score under the posts.

But Saints did not capitalise on their dominance and defensive errors allowed the Deepings flanker to break away from a ruck unchallenged, to score.

Saints did come back again with Robinson once more making ground into Deepings territory, and when he was brought down, half-backs Webb and Hobbs combined to release pacey prop-forward Matt Davies who had appeared in support to run in and score in the corner. Deepings managed the final points of the half with a penalty to reduce the deficit to just two points at half time.

HALF TIME 19 – 21 to Saints

The second half proved much less open, with both teams tightening up their defences with Saints using their bench to introduce Tom Worboys into the centre, Stu Miller into the back row and Dan Hill onto the wing. With Saints defending better in the second half, good attacking play by flankers Aiden Jordan and Phill Fernie, and backs Tom Worboys, Tom Beech and Grant Hobbs, Saints managed to maintain some good attacking positions and two resulting penalty kicks taken by Tom Beech and Lewis Hall extended the Saints lead to where Deepings needed at least two scores.

Fine defensive play by Nick Ashford prevented at least one Deepings score, before Deepings hard work and perseverance eventually paid off with a try in the dying moments. But it was not enough and St Neots Saints saw out the game to progress to the Hunts and Peterborough Cup Final and keep their League and Cup double aspirations alive.
