Saints 57 v 22 Aylestone St James RFC - Home League on 17 Feb 2018

Published on Monday, 19 February 2018

St Neots Saints edged closer to promotion with another impressive league win against Aylestone St James at the weekend, despite yet another slow start that gave Aylestone the confidence to push St Neots for a lot of the first half.

Aylestone got the early try on the board, but this was quickly answered when forwards Nick Ashford and Phill Fernie combined to release flanker Finn Martin around the ruck area and the youngster making his first start for the Saints team, powered through the defence to get Saints back to parity.

Hooker Aiden Jordan then created the next opportunity with a typical burst through the oppositions defensive line, and when taken to ground deep in Aylestone territory, scrum-half Dan Hill gave quick ball to fly-half Joe Woodgate who cut through to touch down. This play was then duplicated from the re-start, with skipper Ross Hubbard catching the kick off and off-loading to Aiden Jordan to cut through once again. This time from the resulting ruck, Hill got quick ball to the blind side winger Dan Court who went around his opposite man to score in the corner.

Aylestone then came back strong and had the Saints team defending their own goal-line for a number of phases, but some solid defending and good counter-rucking turned over the ball and centre Nic Robinson made the vital break and ran the length of the field to get Saints out of trouble. From the resulting line out in the Aylestone 22, a well executed play saw Hill find Hall in mid-field and a simple show-and-go play saw Hall fool the defenders and run through the defence, ending up just short of the try line. Quick ball from Hill to Woodgate and with numbers outside drawing the defenders wide, a gap opened up and Woodgate accelerated through to score.

Saints lead 29 -10 at the break.

With the early nervousness dissipating, an invigorated Saints team came out in the second half and were soon back on the score-sheet with a well deserved team try, with the forwards securing good ball on halfway before going through all the backs hands to the right wing and strong running Court broke tackles of both the winger and full back to score his second of the day.

The forwards then  showed their strength with props Johnny Berwick and Matt Davies making hard yards around the ruck area, and when the forwards were stopped just short of the line, half-back Hill saw the smallest of gaps between the big guys and sneaked through for a sniping scrum-half try.

Saints then conceded a score before Aiden Jorden got a well deserved try of his own, taking a quick tap penalty on halfway before cutting through the retreating Aylestone defenders to score under the posts. Saints then finished with a flourish with Robinson again running the length of the pitch and when caught by the fullback he was strong enough to wait for support and simply off-load to Woodgate to complete his hat-trick.

Lewis Hall kicked one penalty and 5 conversions and Woodgate kicked two conversions.

Young flanker Finn Martin was nominated as Saints Man of the Match.
