Saints 76 v 12 Stamford College Old Boys RFC - Away League on 13 Jan 2018

Published on Monday, 15 January 2018

St Neots Saints went to Stamford College to play out a friendly fixture after SCOB’s could not field a front row, resulting in Saints being awarded with all 5 league points.

So, with the match played with uncontested scrums, both team had good possession of the ball, but it was St Neots who dominated play when in attack and a solid defensive performance from all involved, saw them only concede two tries on the day.

A “Man of the Match” performance from hooker Aiden Jordan saw him score 3 tries in the first half an hour, with typically strong running lines around the ruck area, which allowed him to break straight through the Stamford defences almost at will.

Flanker Phill Fernie found himself on the end of a flowing backs move to go over for a score, before fly-half Ollie Emanuel got on the end of a powerful forwards move where skipper Ross Hubbard, Fernie and lock Rhod Howcroft combined to get up the field before releasing Emanuel to run away and score.

Winger Dan Court was then set up by a blind-side scrummage move with Aiden Jordan and Howcroft again taking defenders out of the game allowing Court an easy run in. Fernie then turned provider when good hands through the backs put him in open space, and with only the opposition full-back to beat he drew the man before popping the ball to Saints full-back Dan Miller who was up in support and Miller was able to finish the move unchallenged.

Saints ended the half with an individual effort when Stamford knocked on on half-way, the forwards secured the ball, the referee allowed the advantage and a quick counter attack by centre Nic Robinson left the Stamford defence flat-footed as he sprinted away to score.

50 – 7 at half time

With the match in the bag, Saints brought on all their subs and immediately young colt Finn Martin, playing at flanker, picked up his first senior try, controlling the ball at the back of a maul after a finely worked line-out catch and drive by the forwards.

Aiden Jordan then went over for his fourth of the match, before Fernie got his second after picking up from the base of a scrum and driving at the Stamford defence before going over the line. Rhod Howcroft finished the scoring after being presented with good ball by the half-back partnership of Will Smith and Emanuel and the big lock powered through for a well deserved score.

Howcroft also kicked 5 conversion attempts and Dan Hill kicked 3.

Coach Paul Wakeford commented after the game, “An excellent Team win today against a Stamford side who clearly knew they were in for a tough game. However, mental attitude of all the players, pace of our play and our handling skills on the day, were superb. Aiden Jordan was outstanding again but lock forward Rhod Howcroft was the glue between the backs and forwards with some fantastic runs and pin point offloads, both would get my vote for Men of the Match! All the Replacements got fair run outs and if we maintain our standards of play, passing and speed in attack and defence, we will get further results like this. An absolute pleasure to watch the Saints today”.
