St Neots Ladies 12 - 10 Welwyn Ladies
St Neots Ladies after their first win of the season

St Neots Ladies latest fixture against Welwyn saw them battle against a strong opponent to take their first win of the season.

The enthusiastic start by the ladies saw them dominate the first half with 90% of play taking place in the oppositions half, however, Welwyn's strong defence held off the St Neots Ladies reaching the try line. Big hits by the forwards, including Tash Parle, Kim Szczepanski and Megan Thody, drove Welwyn further back and drew in the defence creating gaps for the backs quick hands and feet to storm through. Persistence in attack saw Beth Hughes receive a clean line out leading to Kirsty Wilson charging the line after many phases putting the first points on the board, giving St Neots Ladies a 5 - 0 head start going into the second half. Emily Miller took to the tee to kick the conversion but after a gallant effort missed by an inch.

Second half kicked off with the same resilient attitude by both teams, which saw a lot more open field play resulting in Welwyn's first try being scored, the conversion was missed equalling the score to 5-5. St Neots Ladies kept the pressure on with big tackles on the wings by newcomers Nicki Barker and Faye Holton forcing Welwyn to attack the middle. After powerful defence by the Ladies ,Welwyn found a gap and were able to reach the line for another try despite a chase down by the speedsters on the team, including new Fullback Frankie Layland. Another missed conversion set the score at 10 - 5 to Welwyn.

The Ladies reacted quickly to the next kick off by Miller, sprinting after the ball and making the first hit count. After some big tackles by mid-field partnership Libby Robinson and Jessica Hopewell (#Jibby) the ball was turned over by a strong pack performance in the scrum. A good tactical kick by Sophie Johnson in the centres put the ladies on the front foot, as the next 10 minutes of play were fought in Welwyn's 22.

Saints showed character and piled on the pressure with constant play in our hands. With dominating scrums and great supportive play by the forwards, including Marion Roullet, Hayley Robinson, Maxine Coppard and Ellen Munday, repeated pick and goes meant that Wilson crashed forward for her second try of the match. Miller's second attempt at converting was greeted with loud cheers from the girls as it cleared the bar with ease, the score now stood at 12 - 10 to St Neots.

The last five minutes showcased the teamwork and fitness levels of the Ladies, as Welwyn came back fighting for a final try. A clearance kick by fly-half, Libby Robinson, allowed the Saints to reset their defence to hold off the opposition. Continuous impact by the Saints Ladies charging down Welwyn's attempts until the final whistle resulted in a 12 - 10 win for the St Neots Ladies.

Forward of the match went to Tash Parle, while back of the match went to Faye Holton.
