Saints 31 v 22 Aylestone St James RFC - Away League on 4 Nov 2017

Published on Monday, 6 November 2017

St Neots Saints latest league fixture away at Aylestone St James saw them come back from a very shaky start, where they found themselves going into the halftime break 8 – 7 down to lower league opposition.

Aylestone opened the scoring from a line-out catch and drive that the Saints forwards were unable to stop. But they did answer immediately from the resulting kick-off, with winger Kieran Rook competing for the high ball which was tapped back and gathered up by his cousin Jordan Rook. Rook found full-back Rory Dingemans coming on to the ball at pace and Dingemans sliced through the Aylestone defence and with just their full back to beat he drew the tackler before passing outside to supporting winger Dave Hopkins who raced in to score Saints only try of the first half. A converted Aylestone penalty saw the home side go into the break a point up on the league leaders, with Saints fly-half playmaker Joe Woodgate out of the game injured.

A halftime talk by Skipper Ross Hubbard and coach Steve Gibson, saw Saints come out with a better attitude, and with the wind at their backs some good tactical kicking by stand-in fly-half Lewis Hall kept Saints on the front foot and in the Aylestone half. A loose line-out throw by Aylestone in their own 22 was picked off by lock Andy Taylor who made ground to the goal-line, where hooker Aiden Jordan went over, but the try was ruled out. Saints kept the pressure on and when Kieran Rook went close again lock Nick Ashford and prop Johnny Berwick were on hand to secure the ball and from the resulting ruck, scrum-half Jack Webb found No.8 Rhod Howcroft on a line breaking run close in and when held up short Howcroft offloaded to Dingemans who was on his shoulder in support and the talented youngster now playing at centre, went over to score and regain the lead for the Saints.

Aylestone came back with a try of their own but Saints showed character and piled on the pressure with almost constant play in the Aylestone half. Back-row replacement Dan Miller made an immediate impact charging down an Aylestone kick out of defence, and when Saints secured the loose ball, quick hands by the half-backs found centre Nic Robinson cutting straight through the defence and when he was finally brought down, good ruck ball was presented to Webb, and the Webb / Howcroft combo worked again and this time the big man went over for a try of his own.

Saints fourth bonus point try came from Lewis Hall after strong runs from Robinson and Jordan Rook again got Saints back into the Aylestone 22, and from another strong ruck position, Webb combined with Hall who went over under the posts.

Hall then converted a penalty before a stong Aylestone team came back with another score, but by then it was too little too late.

Hall also kicked 4 of 4 conversion attempts.
