Saints 43 v 8 Wellingborough RFC - Home League on 21 Oct 2017

Published on Tuesday, 24 October 2017

The St Neots Saints hosted the league leaders Wellingborough OG’s on Saturday and sent out a message to the rest of the Midland 4 East league with a convincing home win.

On a very wind day, St Neots Saints decided to play against the wind in the first half and aggressive defence from the Saints pack kept Wellingborough out for long periods, while line breaking runs from backs Dan Court, Dave Hopkins and Kieran Rook kept Saints on the front foot and in Wellingborough territory. Eventually, a typical strong run from hooker Aiden Jordan got Saints deep into the wellingborough half and from a resulting scrum, Saints scrum-half Jack Webb got good ball out to fly-half Joe Woodgate who ran a

dummy switch move in mid-field with Lewis Hall before popping the ball to outside-centre Rory Dingemans on a straight line through the defence to open the scoring.

Wellingborough responded with a late penalty to get the sides in at half-time with Saints narrowly leading 5 - 3.

Playing with the wind at their backs in the second half, Saints were able to dictate play more and keep Wellingborough pinned in their own half for long periods of the game. Another break from Aiden Jordan got Saints into the Wellingborough 22 and then strong carries at the base of the rucks from props Johnny Berwick and Matt Davies drew in defenders until Webb found Aiden Jordan at first receiver and he burst through the goal-line defence to score a try under the posts.

Wellingborough came back hard and Saints found themselves defending their own goal-line, but a turnover by the ever-present back row got Woodgate the ball and an 80 metre kick downfield was chased down by Woodgate and when the Wellingborough full-back and winger fumbled the ball, Saints winger Dave Hopkins was first on the scene to pick up the loose ball and jog over the line for a try.

With confidence growing, Saints then turned to their strong bench and brought Nic Robinson and Rob Turner into the backs and it paid immediate dividends when Robinson took a flat pass from Woodgate on the gain-line and the big centre glided through the Wellingborough defenders and outpaced the full-back for a score under the posts.

The two Matts, Cartwright and Davies then set up the next score with Davies being awarded a penalty in the Wellingborough 22 and a quick tap and drive for the line from Cartwright got Saints up to the goal-line and the half-backs, with quick ball, found Aiden Jordan again crashing through to get his second try of the day.

With 5 tries in the bag, Saints began to play a more open game and on their next attacking play, quick hands through the backs eventually found flanker Jordan Rook out wide and Rook dived over for a score in the corner.

Fly-half Joe Woodgate sealed the emphatic win with a solo effort after No.8 Phill Fernie picked up at the base of a scrum in mid-field, and when Webb found Woodgate the quick thinking fly-half beat his opposite number, jinked past a couple of covering defenders and rounded the full back to score a fine individual effort.

Wellingborough managed a consolation try in the dying minutes, and Lewis Hall managed to kick 4 of his 7 conversion attempts.
