Colts 19 v 26 Luton RFC - Away League on 1 Oct 2016

Published on Sunday, 2 October 2016

The Colts travelled away to Luton with 17 players, with a number of players missing through injuries and family occasions.

Head coach Piers decided to change the team around, putting some of the players in different positions, and from the off the balance of the team was perfect.

1: Karl Sinclair, 2: Finn Martin, 3: Ryan Burke, 4: Robbie Leigh ( pack leader ) 5: Matt Bottomley 6: Aedan Pearsall, 7: Connor Harrison, 8: Kieran Arber, 9: Sean Judge, 10: Rory Diggerman, 11: Keiran Humphrey, 12: Lewis Yeoman, 13: James Spooner, 14: Josh Fulton, 15 Ben Bazley, Subs Connor Post, Tom Palmer

From the kick off Saints pressured Luton, the forwards dominating the play they were controlled and had purpose. 5 mins of Saints pressure the ball went out to the backs, Rory ran at his opposite number, kicked over him, collected it and scored the try. It was unconverted. Within the play James Spooner went on one of his strong runs, he was met by one of Luton's big men and unfortunately popped his shoulder. His game was over, replaced by Tom Palmer. Our injury seemed to kick start the Luton Machine. They the put Saints under a lot of pressure, 15mins in to the game that pressure told, they had a scrum, controlled it enough for the No8 to pick up and bundle it over the line. They converted to lead 7-5. Pressure continued they had a penalty kick at our posts it was missed but instead of clearing the line with a kick, we tried to run it out. It was dropped and the resulting Scrum lost they went on the blindside for an easy try. This was also converted. 14-5. The clock was running down to the end of the first half Luton stepped up again ran at our defence they encountered some poor tackling and scored leading the first half 19-5.

Piers gave a great half time motivational talk, it bouyed the team, the main areas to improve was at break down and securing the ball, playing heads up Rugby. Connor Post came on for Connor Harrison. He went to second row, Matt Bottomley to No8 and Kieran Arber to Blindside flanker. Saints came out firing on all cylinders, fighting for everything tying up their forwards. The ball slip out to the saints back, Rory missed out 2 player to Josh Fulton he ran the ball into Lutons 22 which went out of play. From the resulting line out we won the ball, it got as far as Rory who went over the line. 19-12. From the kick off our pressure told again, winning every 50-50 ball, Luton was panicking making mistakes gaps we're opening, Rory found a gap ran through their defensive line followed by Tom Palmer, it was off loaded to him centimetres from the line to secure a try, this was converted 19-19. It would be very unlucky and disappointing for any team to loose. Fortunately for Luton they won the ball from our put in at the scrum which was inside our 22 and went over for their 4th try winning 26-19

There are a lot of positives 1: lines out won on our put in 100% on their put in 80% 2: Scrums our put in 2 lost only, we didn't win any against the head. 3: Rory at number 10. 4: Ben Bazley at number 15. Next Game Saturday 8th against Long Buckby
